Entry requirements

You will need: a minimum classification of 2.1 in a first degree (or equivalent); and, preferably, a Masters degree (or Masters degree pending); and (if English is not your first language) appropriate English Language qualifications (you will normally be required to achieve minimum IELTS scores of 6.5 or equivalent). You will also need to have the commitment and motivation to undertake a sustained programme of independent and self-directed study and training as a researcher.

Course content

Based within our Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, our research programme in Sociology is involved in a wider range of interests and specialisms ranging from empirically-oriented primary research to highly conceptual theoretical work.

Particularly important themes include the tradition of cultural studies, the sociology of education, and community and DIY activism.

The programme is committed to fostering an inclusive and interdisciplinary research culture that involves full-time, fractional and visiting lecturers.

Members of the programme have published books with major scholarly publishers and in internationally recognised journals, and have been involved in the development and organisation of international conferences.

Information for international students

If English is not your first language you must demonstrate English language skills to the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 at commencement. We will then expect you to undertake courses to develop your English language competence to the equivalent of IELTS 7.0 in your first year of study.
