Course contentThe MA Higher Education is a 180 credit programme of study which opens up new career development opportunities. It provides you with a view of the learning and teaching process set against the wider context of policy, research/knowledge and societal developments. It is designed to support those applicants who wish to take a lead in the development of learning, teaching and assessment in their own context and to contribute to the wider field of research and developments in learning and teaching. It forms the first stage of our Professional Doctorate which recognises your individual professionalism at the highest academic level.
Embedded within the MA Higher Education is the 60 credit Postgraduate Certificate Higher Education (Pg Cert HE). This is a recognised programme of professional development in learning and teaching for staff in Higher Education and is accredited by the Higher Education Academy for membership as a Fellow. Applicants for the Pg Cert HE will need to be engaged in teaching at a Higher Education level in order to meet the practice-based requirements of the course.
Staff actively engaged in teaching/supporting student learning for whom teaching is not their substantive role e.g. librarians, technicians and postgraduate students can apply to take the first module of the Pg Cert HE and exit with a Postgraduate Certificate of Special Study in Supporting Student Learning. This module focuses upon the facilitation of student learning through effective design, delivery and evaluation processes. It is accredited by the HEA for Associate Fellowship status. If you are taking the Supporting Student Learning module on its own or as part of the Pg Cert HE you will need to make arrangements for peer observation of your practice.
The Pg Cert HE stage takes as its starting point the disciplinary context within which you are working and the challenges posed by teaching in an increasingly complex and diverse sector. All modules provide opportunities for you to extend your own teaching practice informed by debate, key concepts, current developments, insights from your peers in similar or different disciplines and the research literature. Optional modules allow you to focus on your own specific interests in areas of learning and teaching practice. You can exit with a Pg Cert HE having completed 60 credits or continue to the MA. You can also return to complete the MA / Professional Doctorate with your credits at a later date. The MA HE further marries together the theory and practice nature of education and culminates in a piece of advanced scholarly practitioner research in the form of a 60-credit dissertation. The core modules provide support in the development of research practice in Higher Education and the option modules offer opportunities to focus on specific interests. In this way the MA provides an integrated and supported programme that enables participants to either apply to continue with the doctoral level of the programme or to exit with an MA in Higher Education.
