You will need: A minimum classification of 2.1 in a first degree (or equivalent); and, preferably, A Masters degree (or Masters degree pending); and (if English is not your first language) Appropriate English Language qualifications (you will normally be required to achieve minimum IELTS scores of 6.5 or equivalent). You will also need to have the commitment and motivation to undertake a sustained programme of independent and self-directed study and training as a researcher.

Course contentResearch within our Faculty of Science and Technology has an applied focus, with real-world impact. Experienced and research-active staff work in close collaboration with the bio-industry, NHS and other research institutions within the UK, Europe and the US. Our facilities at the Cavendish Campus are equipped with state of the art instrumentation.
Our research in Biotechnology encompasses a number of areas including biopolymer production; bioprocesses optimisation; environmentally friendly dye remediation and green chemistry. Other areas of interest include biorefineries and biofuel production using algae, stem cell technology including mesenchymal stem cells and cord blood stem cells.
Information for international students
If English is not your first language you must demonstrate English language skills to the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 at commencement. We will then expect you to undertake courses to develop your English language competence to the equivalent of IELTS 7.0 in your first year of study.
