Entry requirements

You will need: a minimum classification of 2.1 in a first degree (or equivalent); and, preferably, a Masters degree (or Masters degree pending); and (if English is not your first language). Appropriate English Language qualifications (you will normally be required to achieve minimum IELTS scores of 6.5 or equivalent). You will also need to have the commitment and motivation to undertake a sustained programme of independent and self-directed study and training as a researcher.

Course content

The Department of Architecture has an international reputation for excellence in research. In the last Research Excellence Framework, twenty per cent of its architecture research was rated at 4* (world leading) and forty five per cent at 3* (Internationally excellent).

Research is encouraged through scholarship, consultancy and design. The Department has close links to practice, with award winning practitioners amongst its research staff.

Research themes include: Architectural History and Cultural Studies; Expanded Territories; Experimental Practice (EXP); and Technical Studies. These are loose alignments of staff, students and practitioners who undertake joint research initiatives and projects and organise events.

Information for international students

If English is not your first language you must demonstrate English language skills to the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 at commencement. We will then expect you to undertake courses to develop your English language competence to the equivalent of IELTS 7.0 in your first year of study.
