Entry requirements

A relevant undergraduate qualification or equivalent relevant professional qualification and have at least 2 years work-based experience in relevant employment or voluntary work with responsibility for managing others Have relevant professional/work-based experience of at least 5 years, including 2 years in a role that involves leading and managing others in a relevant context A relevant context is employment or voluntary work in the health and social care sector For applicants who have not received their secondary education in English, a score of 6.5 in the IELTS test (including a minimum score of 6.5 in the written component or equivalent qualification)

Course content

This newly added part-time course is designed for people in employment in leadership and management roles in the health and social care sectors and also in relevant third sector organisations, social enterprises and private sector companies. Most students on the course will be sponsored by employers and, where there are sufficient numbers, will undertake the course in work cohorts.

The course can be built up from a post graduate certificate to diploma and finally the MSc. You can register for any of these three awards and continue or step off as required at each stage depending on your own circumstances. It is our intention to apply to have the Certificate, Diploma and Masters awards approved as Continuing Professional Development courses by the College of Social Work for those students who are Registered Social Workers.

MSc stage (2 modules)
Learning in Context (Strategic Leadership in Health and Social Care) 20 credits
This module is an opportunity for you to examine how strategic goals are devised and met in organisations. Your own organisation will be used as a case study to explore contextual and internal processes. The vision and goals of the organisations will be explored and a critical analysis of the outcomes will be scrutinised.
Work-based Inquiry Project (40 credits)
This module is intended as a vehicle for developing the skills of practice- or work- orientated research, of analysing data and making work-relevant judgements, and of reporting findings and recommendations in formats recognised in that profession or business sector relevant to the student.
It provides the opportunity for you to make a significant contribution to management and leadership in practice, and for your organisation to benefit through the recommendations and outputs of a robust inquiry or investigation that would not otherwise have been done. The module includes the preparation of a project proposal and addressing ethical considerations.
