Entry requirements

A relevant undergraduate qualification or equivalent relevant professional qualification and have at least 2 years work-based experience in relevant employment or voluntary work with responsibility for managing others Have relevant professional/work-based experience of at least 5 years, including 2 years in a role that involves leading and managing others in a relevant context A relevant context is employment or voluntary work in the health and social care sector For applicants who have not received their secondary education in English, a score of 6.5 in the IELTS test (including a minimum score of 6.5 in the written component or equivalent qualification)

Course content

This newly added part-time course is designed for people in employment in leadership and management roles in the health and social care sectors and also in relevant third sector organisations, social enterprises and private sector companies. Most students on the course will be sponsored by employers and, where there are sufficient numbers, will undertake the course in work cohorts.
The course can be built up from a post graduate certificate to diploma and finally the MSc. You can register for any of these three awards and continue or step off as required at each stage depending on your own circumstances. It is our intention to apply to have the Certificate, Diploma and Masters awards approved as Continuing Professional Development courses by the College of Social Work for those students who are Registered Social Workers.
PG Cert stage (3 modules)
Individual and Professional Development 20 credits
This introductory module is designed to enable you and your organisation to gain full value from the course. You will map your previous professional development and carry out a needs analysis using the Real World Group Transformational Leadership 360 degree Questionnaire in relation to individual, professional and organisational learning and performance. Learning in Context (Leading and Managing Change) 20 credits
Understanding change in organisations is critical for good leadership and management. This module provides the context for you to explore theoretical and empirical evidence on organisational change and the most appropriate leadership and management styles in the health and social care sector.
Assessment is through an assignment of 3,000 words
And either:
Learning in Context (Managing Resources) 20 credits
The learning on the module will include competing perspectives on the management of resources in organisations and examine the importance of prudent and efficient financial, human, information and administrative resource management in organisations and your role in leading and managing resources in your own organisation. It will provide opportunities for you to explore a range of interpersonal interactions and skills for management of resources in your workplace.
This is a taught module requiring attendance at the university of 4/5 whole days spread over several months. Where the course is delivered off-site then the module will run at the employer's venue.
Assessment is through an assignment of 3,000 words.
Learning in Context (Supervision in a Professional Context) 20 credits
This module will involve taught sessions as well as group and individual learning activities in order to gain a deep and systematic understanding of supervision in the professional context in your organisation. The supervisory process is concerned with facilitating learning, critical reflection and enquiry and engaging with risk and risk management. The module will explore good challenging practice in supervision, apply theories of adult learning and blocks to performance and explore the development of professional practice through coaching, mentoring and providing feedback to supervisees on their practice.
Assessment is through an assignment of 3,000 words
