Entry requirements

You will need: A minimum classification of 2.1 in a first degree (or equivalent); and, preferably, A Masters degree (or Masters degree pending); and (if English is not your first language) Appropriate English Language qualifications (you will normally be required to achieve minimum IELTS scores of 6.5 or equivalent). You will also need to have the commitment and motivation to undertake a sustained programme of independent and self-directed study and training as a researcher.

Based within our Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, our research programme in Modern and Applied Languages covers a wide range of research activities, characterised by collaboration and inter-disciplinarity.
Our strength lies in the breadth and depth of our research, encompassing Francophone research to China studies.
PhD students are valued colleagues in our research community, and their work reflects the diversity of the work of the whole Faculty. Broadly, our research is grouped in the following areas: Contemporary China Centre; Francophone Studies Research Group; HOMELandS - Hub for Migration, Exiles, Languages and Spaces; Translating Cultures; and War and Culture.

Information for international students

If English is not your first language you must demonstrate English language skills to the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 at commencement. We will then expect you to undertake courses to develop your English language competence to the equivalent of IELTS 7.0 in your first year of study.
