An undergraduate degree in a life science-related discipline. Applicants with undergraduate degrees in other relevant subjects will be considered case-by-case. UK: Upper Second Class Honours. China: 1st tier universities: 75% or above; 2nd tier universities: 80% or above. North America: 3.0 cumulative GPA (out of 4) or 3.2 cumulative GPA in the final two years of your undergraduate programme. Other regions: Equivalent academic qualifications.

Course content

This programme provides a thorough understanding of key approaches for studying biological processes at the molecular level. It takes advantage of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s advanced English-language capabilities, distinctive international features, and state-of-the-art research facilities.

The course covers biotechnology-related topics such as molecular biology, protein biochemistry and drug discovery, as well as post-genomic biology (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and bioimaging), and bioinformatics (e.g. acquisition and statistical analysis of large-scale biodata). It also places a major emphasis on providing project management skills. After these taught modules, the programme focuses on an in-depth research project and specialised dissertation. Customized individual learning plans are designed for students, in keeping with their backgrounds and career aspirations. Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of an MRes degree from the University of Liverpool, UK.

The programme prepares graduates for advanced research in both Western and Chinese university settings, as well as in the bio-industrial sector such as biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Academic Staff

The Department’s fast-growing, diverse academic staff have joined XJTLU from the United Kingdom, United States, Greece and Japan. Our staff are highly research active and have trained in prestigious universities including Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, UCL, MIT, University of California, Edinburgh and other high-calibre institutions. The interests of staff are in the general area of the molecular biosciences but, more specifically, their research covers: cell signaling; disease mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders; microbiology; molecular pharmacology; protein engineering and structural biology; proteomics; sensory system adaptation; stem cells; systems biology; and virology.

Lab Introduction

The Department features custom-designed laboratories and is extremely well-equipped for research. Over 30 million RMB has been invested in state-of-the-art instrumentation including real-time PCR instruments, LTQ-Orbitrap and triple quadruple mass spectrometers, Affymetrix microarray and DNA pyrosequencing systems, bioanalyzer, fluorescence-activated cell sorter, confocal microscopes, a range of centrifuges and ultracentrifuges, PHERAstar microplate reader, and an Odyssey infrared imaging system. Overall, these facilities allow researchers in the Department to undertake internationally competitive research and also allow the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in advanced techniques.

Suzhou Industrial Park, BioBay and Cold Spring Harbor Asia

SIP is rapidly becoming the best base in China for biopharmaceutical research and development, and is also particularly noted for its investment in the diagnostic and nanotech industries, with the establishment of the BioBay science complex (http://en.biobay.com.cn/main/index.asp). BioBay draws on a diverse array of international and professional scientific research resources to provide a sophisticated infrastructure for bioscience R&D. This has proven to be valuable in recruiting many international R&D institutes and renowned scientists to Suzhou. The BioBay hub is within walking distance of XJTLU and therefore an ideal place for you to do an internship.

SIP is also home to Cold Spring Harbor Asia (www.csh-asia.org) which hosts major scientific symposia, conferences and summer schools in SIP, thereby providing our students with the opportunity to interact with world-famous researchers.

Today, China has the largest number of managed honey bee colonies in the world; however, as elsewhere in the world, the number of honey bee colonies is declining in certain regions, with major consequences for plant fertilization and food security. My team is using cutting-edge molecular techniques to survey key pathogens, to determine their effects on honey bee health and to develop effective counter-measures.”

XJTLU offers a generous scholarship of 50% of the total tuition fee for all full-time masters programmes. All applicants for September 2015 will be considered for this scholarship, based on academic merit, and no separate application is required.
