Entry requirements

Graduates with an honours degree at 2:1 or above in a related subject (e.g. Drama, Theatre, Live Art, Place/Space/Time Based Art) will normally register for the MA or graduates with an honours degree from another discipline and working in a professional arts environment or with extensive experience of arts practice. Academic tutors will consider such applications on an individual basis.

Course content

The MA Theatre and Performance is an exciting taught postgraduate degree that will allow you to focus on developing your own arts practice. Your practice will be supported by notably experienced tutors and guest artists and you will be encouraged to create performances for festivals, city centre venues, and site specific projects or for the touring studio. We will encourage you to develop strategies on how to reflect, theorise and document your practice and offer you a platform to share your thinking for public dissemination. This year guest artists will include Third Angel and Emma Bennett.


The MA in Theatre and Performance will enhance the conceptual, creative and compositional strategies that you employ in making work and you will be is part of a vibrant suite of practice-based taught postgraduate programmes in the creative arts, also including applied theatre, fine arts and music. Each of these Masters programmes are designed for practitioner orientated study and research, providing you with the opportunity to develop your creative practice and reflective thinking within a supportive community of artists and robust culture of enquiry. Whilst your focus will be on Theatre and Performance, there will also be opportunities for exciting cross-disciplinary study across these two programmes. Each year there will be a festival celebrating the independent practice of the MA work on campus and opportunities during taught modules to share work in professional venues in the City.

Information for international students

International students will need to demonstrate that they have equivalent experience /qualifications as home students (ie same entry criteria as above). If their first language is not English they must show evidence of English Language competence at IELTS level 6.0 (in all areas of the test) or equivalent.
