Once in post, most training is provided informally, on the job, with support from more experienced colleagues. Some larger agencies also run graduate training schemes, such as the British Market Research Bureau (BMRB) , which runs a two-year graduate scheme.

There are also a variety of short, external courses available, specifically designed for market research professionals. The Market Research Society (MRS)  runs an on-the-job professional development scheme which many organisations actively encourage their employees to utilise. This scheme takes three years to complete. The Association for Qualitative Research (AQR)  runs a variety of courses, including a foundation course to introduce new qualitative market researchers to the profession.

The Royal Statistical Society (RSS)  also offers a range of courses for those specialising in quantitative research.

Some organisations encourage employees to study towards the more formal qualifications offered by the MRS and may offer financial support, provide study leave, or both. The MRS offers a diploma in market and social research practice, as well as offering certificate and advanced certificate qualifications.

Many of the qualifications offered by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)  include a market research component. There is also a range of relevant postgraduate courses available in statistics, marketing or social research.
