Database administrator : Salary and conditions

  • Range of typical starting salaries: £25,000 - £30,000 (salary data collected Feb 10).
  • Typical salary after two to three years' experience: £35,000 - £40,000 (salary data collected Feb 10).
  • Typical salary range for a senior database administrator (e.g. after 10 - 15 years in the role): £40,000 - £60,000 (salary data collected Feb 10).
  • The range of salaries depends on the industry and location. Rates tend to be higher in the financial services and banking, investment and insurance sectors, and in London and the South East.
  • Working hours typically include regular unsocial hours. Overnight and weekend work is often necessary as maintenance and development work needs to be undertaken during periods of low usage. Database administrators (DBAs) are often on call if a critical problem occurs.
  • The working environment is informal and it is possible for work to be carried out from home or from other remote locations using modems, laptops, email and the internet. There is an increasing trend towards home working.
  • Self-employment or freelance work is possible. An increasing number of DBAs do contract work, but this often requires several years' experience.
  • Women are currently underrepresented in the IT profession. Organisations such as Women in Technology provide information and advice to women interested in a career in technology.
  • Jobs are located throughout the UK.
  • The work can be demanding as organisations depend on effective databases, and there can be significant pressure to ensure that they operate smoothly, particularly if accessed online.
  • Travel and absence from home at night may occasionally be required.
  • There are numerous opportunities to work abroad.
