Editorial assistant : Salary and conditions

  • Starting salaries are likely to be in the range of £14,000 to £20,000 and vary according to the size and type of employer. See The Bookseller   salary survey for further information (salary data collected May 2010).
  • Average salaries in publishing are around £26,000. After 10 to 15 years senior editor salaries range from about £23,000 to £40,000, with higher salaries possible in the larger publishing houses (salary data collected May 2010).
  • Working hours are typically nine to five with some extra hours, often without payment, for overtime. Work may involve extra hours as deadlines approach.
  • Work is largely office-based although more opportunities for home-based working are emerging with the growth in digital publishing and the potential to work electronically.
  • The working environment and the dress code are mostly informal, although this depends on the publisher.
  • Career breaks, part-time and freelance work are possible. The most likely areas for freelance work are proofreading, translation, copy-editing, copywriting and styling. The Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP)  provides industry-specific support and advice.
  • Most publishing opportunities in the UK arise within a 50-mile radius of London, with some positions available outside this area. Oxford also has a strong publishing centre and there are opportunities in other regional centres (e.g. Edinburgh). Skills gained with UK publishers or on UK postgraduate courses in publishing may also be used overseas.
  • Travel within a working day, absence from home at night and overseas work or travel are all uncommon.
