Environmental manager : Salary and conditions

  • Range of typical starting salaries: £18,000 - £30,000, depending on experience.
  • Range of typical salaries at senior level and/or with experience (e.g. after 10-15 years in the role): £30,000 - £50,000.
  • Salaries vary considerably according to the geographical location, sector and size and nature of the employing organisation, with salaries around 15% higher in London. The level of pay will vary depending on professional background.
  • Working hours vary according to the industry. The public sector typically has working hours of nine to five, Monday to Friday. Flexitime and other benefits, including a final salary pension scheme, health insurance and an option to work from home, are sometimes available. In the private sectors, hours are more likely to vary, with some weekend work.
  • The work can involve both office-based activities and field work, which can be conducted outside in all weathers. A reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required.
  • There may be considerable travel within a working day for which mileage for site visits may be payable.
  • Self-employment and freelance work are possible in environmental consultancy. Part-time work or career breaks may be possible in some organisations.
  • Work is mostly regional, although opportunities exist throughout the UK. In some organisations, there are opportunities to travel and work oversees.
