Land/geomatics surveyor : Salary and conditions

  • Salaries are dependent on several factors, including the company’s location and sector.
  • A graduate may expect to receive a starting salary in the range of £16,000 - £20,000.
  • Once you have chartered status, your salary is likely to rise to £27,000 - £34,000.
  • The range of typical salaries at senior level, including management and/or partnership responsibilities is £44,000 - £72,000.
  • Working hours are mainly 9am to 5pm, but this varies between locations and may not be the case when work is based overseas. Weekend or shift work may sometimes be required.
  • Surveyors frequently work away from home and are often paid for travelling time. They may travel considerable distances within the UK. Car and petrol allowances are available.
  • You must expect to spend a good part of your time working outdoors and in all weather conditions.
  • It is possible to become self-employed, although the majority of land/geomatics surveyors are in salaried employment as it is not always easy to find your own work.
  • There are currently more men than women in this areas of work. Women into Science, Engineering and Construction (WISE)  offers advice and support for women interested in careers in this field.
  • Surveys must be completed to deadlines and this can sometimes be stressful.
  • Most overseas work is on a short-term basis, although individuals are sometimes required to remain abroad for a substantial period of time. Overseas allowances are available.
  • Some multinational companies offer opportunities for extended work overseas.
