Licensed conveyancer : Salary and conditions

  • Salaries for trainees start at around £14,000. After qualification and three years of experience, the salary range is around £25,000 - £50,000 and salaries for senior management posts are £35,000 - £55,000. Partners or owners of conveyancing firms may earn £60,000 or more.
  • Salaries vary considerably according to status, region and type of employer.
  • Total earnings for employed conveyancers may be enhanced by commission payments. Large legal firms may offer considerable fringe benefits such as health insurance, contributory pension, gym membership, etc.
  • Working hours are typically spread over a 37-hour week, possibly with some extra hours. Some companies open in the evening or at weekends.
  • The job is office based and involves liaising with colleagues, clients and other professionals.
  • Self-employment and freelance work are common. Holders of the full Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) licence can set up in practice when they have three years of experience.
  • Part-time work and job-sharing are both possible.
  • The male to female ratio is even.
  • Jobs are available in most towns and cities in England and Wales but there are more licensed conveyancers in some areas of the country than others.
  • Conveyancing may also be done by a solicitor, paralegal (England and Wales) or legal executive (England and Wales). There are few licensed conveyancers in Scotland and none in Northern Ireland.
  • Travel within the working day may occasionally be required, but overnight absence from home is seldom needed and overseas work or travel is very unlikely.
