What inspired you to study in the UK?
It might sound unexpected, but my inspiration started with Harry Potter. When I was around ten years old, I became fascinated by the idea of studying in the UK, the history, the culture, and that sense of academic 'magic' really stayed with me.
As I grew older, that childhood dream evolved into a more concrete goal. I became motivated by the UK's strong academic reputation and its global perspective on education. Studying here felt like the perfect opportunity to challenge myself, step out of my comfort zone, and gain an international outlook.
In many ways, being here now feels like a full-circle moment, something my younger self would be incredibly proud of.
Why did you choose to study the MSc Marketing (Digital Marketing) at the University of Brighton?
When applying for the Chevening Scholarship, I had to select three universities. The University of Brighton stood out immediately, particularly for the strong support it offers to international students. Their responsiveness and willingness to guide applicants, especially those applying from abroad, made a significant difference during the decision-making process.
The course itself was another key factor. Certain course modules aligned perfectly with the kind of practical and strategic experience I wanted to gain, for example:
- brand and communications
- buyer behaviour
- digital marketing
- marketing planning and strategy
- responsible marketing.
I was looking for a programme that would allow me to apply theory to real-world situations, and Brighton offered exactly that.
Why did you apply for a Chevening Scholarship?
There were two main reasons.
The first was actually very personal; my dad sent me the opportunity and encouraged me to apply, describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. That initial push made me take it seriously.
The second reason was the challenge itself. Chevening is highly competitive, and I wanted to test my potential in that environment. At the same time, it aligned with my long-standing goal of studying in the UK. It combined ambition, opportunity, and personal growth in a way that felt right for me.
What does your Chevening Scholarship cover?
It is a fully-funded programme that covers:
- tuition fees
- return flights to and from the UK
- visa application costs
- a monthly stipend to support living expenses.
The scholarship also includes arrival and departure allowances, as well as additional support for required travel related to programme events.
Beyond financial support, Chevening offers a tailored engagement programme, providing access to networking opportunities with:
- alumni
- fellow scholars
- industry professionals
- UK government representatives.
What did the Chevening application process involve and how competitive was it?
The application process is rigorous and can take up to a year. It includes submitting an online application with four key essays focused on:
- leadership
- networking
- studying in the UK
- career plans.
Applicants must also demonstrate at least 2,800 hours of work experience.
Shortlisted candidates are invited to interview at their local British embassy and must provide supporting documents, including references and academic transcripts.
Securing an unconditional offer from a UK university is also required.
The scholarship is extremely competitive, with a global success rate of around 2% to 3%. In my home country, thousands apply each year, but only a small number progress to interviews, and even fewer are selected. Being awarded the scholarship is therefore both an achievement and a responsibility.
What do you wish you'd known before applying for Chevening?
I wish I had fully understood how demanding the essay-writing process would be. It's not just about writing well - it's about being deeply reflective and intentional. You are asked to clearly articulate who you are as a leader, how you build networks, and what impact you want to create in the future.
It pushes you to think critically about your identity, your values, and your long-term vision. That level of self-awareness takes time, but it's also one of the most valuable parts of the process.
What does being a Chevening scholar involve?
It goes beyond academic study. Being a Chevening scholar means being part of a global network of individuals who are committed to creating meaningful change. Scholars are expected to contribute to areas such as:
- economic development
- global security
- social inclusion
- sustainability.
For me, it represents a responsibility to lead with purpose. It's about recognising that leadership is not just about personal success, but about the impact you have on others. Chevening scholars are not only future leaders - they are expected to be active drivers of change.
What has been the highlight of your Masters degree so far?
One of the biggest highlights has been the people I've met. Being surrounded by individuals from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds has been incredibly enriching.
The exchange of perspectives, experiences, and ideas has taught me things I would never have learned in a traditional classroom setting. That diversity has been one of the most valuable aspects of my experience.
In your opinion, what makes a strong Chevening candidate?
A strong Chevening candidate is someone who is willing to take initiative and embrace change. It's about being:
- adaptable
- committed to growth
- open-minded.
Confidence is important, but it must come with humility and a genuine desire to contribute to something bigger than yourself. Ultimately, it's about having the vision and determination to turn ideas into action.
What are your career ambitions?
My ambition is to build a digital marketing agency focused on tourism marketing, with a particular emphasis on showcasing the 'Seven Wonders of Angola.'
Through this, I aim to highlight the beauty and potential of my country, attract international attention, and contribute to economic growth by creating opportunities and jobs within the local community.
How do you plan to use what you've learned when you return to your home country?
I plan to apply my knowledge in a tangible way by building initiatives that create real impact. My goal is not just to bring back skills, but to use them to develop sustainable opportunities that benefit others.
What advice can you give to others hoping to gain a Chevening Scholarship?
Don't be afraid to take the leap and trust yourself. Self-belief is the starting point of every opportunity.
Rejection is guaranteed if you never try, so put yourself forward, take the risk, and go after what you want, even if it feels out of reach. That mindset is what made this journey possible for me.
