Job description

As a Scientist, you will support laboratory-based analytical work to provide high-quality chemical measurement data.

Specifically, you will carry out practical scientific work to support our regulatory, forensic and investigative activities. Undertaking routine laboratory work, you will analyse biological samples for chemical biomarkers, whilst supporting a range of research projects.

You will have the chance to specialise and work in either analytical chemistry or biological monitoring, delivering analytical services and applying analytical techniques. Involved in chromatography and spectrometry work to generate data, you will support analytical projects, handle samples and chemicals and deliver routine lab work.

We are now looking for two Scientists to join our Exposure Measurement Team within the Science, Engineering and Analysis Division (SEAD), Health – Exposure & Control (H-EC) Group on a full-time, permanent basis. Part-time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part-time applicants who can commit to a minimum of 30 hours per week.

What we are looking for

  • Practical laboratory experience applying analytical chemistry techniques, such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography and/or mass spectrometry, gained through work, higher education or structured training
  • Experience of method application, data analysis and ensuring data quality
  • The ability to collate, manage, analyse and interpret scientific data
  • The ability to identify technical solutions and contribute to the development of new or improved measurement approaches
  • The ability to troubleshoot instrument and method issues
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Good communication skills
  • A degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a closely related discipline with a substantial analytical chemistry component
