Tutu did an LLB at the University of Exeter before doing her LPC at the University of Law and finally joining Weil on a training contract
Why did you choose Weil?
I was initially drawn to Weil’s reputation in private equity and restructuring, combined with the firm’s strong capabilities and leadership across all the practice areas involved in the lifecycle of a deal. For me, this depth of expertise meant that as a trainee, I would be able to get a breath of exposure throughout my training contract, helping me to make an informed decision on which area to qualify into as an associate. I was also interested in Weil’s approach to pro bono work. Having always found fulfilment in giving back to my community, I was impressed by the fact that lawyers at Weil are encouraged to undertake 50 hours of pro bono a year and that many even exceed this.
Participating in the firm’s Black Mentoring Scheme, held in partnership with Aspiring Solicitors, also informed my decision to apply for a vacation scheme. This scheme gave me a great insight into the culture of the firm and allowed me to engage with an associate mentor as well as the graduate recruitment team.
Tell us about the vacation scheme
Participating in the 2022 spring vacation scheme solidified my interest in training at Weil. During the two-week scheme, I sat in the restructuring team. Some members of the team were working on a very timely and dynamic matter and it was exhilarating to see, first hand, how they worked closely together to meet deadlines and respond to unexpected developments. The height of my experience was getting to sit in on a client meeting and watch a live court proceeding. I was also given a number of tasks by my supervisor who was very supportive and answered any questions I had. In addition, I undertook a number of assessments, giving me the opportunity to work on group projects with other members of my vacation scheme cohort.
The graduate recruitment team were especially supportive and planned fun activities during the scheme. There were a number of opportunities to interact with associates and partners at the firm who were friendly and always willing to share their experiences. Observing how the lawyers in my team worked together and interacted with one another confirmed that I could expect a supportive work environment at Weil.
Tell us about your training contract
Having just begun my training contract in August 2023, I am thoroughly enjoying the three weeks of training and activities Weil has planned for its new joiners, facilitating our transition into our new roles. These sessions have proven to be extremely helpful as I continue to acclimatise to life at Weil.
As I begin my first seat in the Disputes and Investigations team, I am particularly excited about getting to work on high-profile cases under the guidance of my supervisor. I am most looking forward to seeing first-hand how complex disputes unfold in practice and learning how best to respond to the challenges faced by our clients.
