Job description

The BCS Computing teacher training scholarships programme is a government funded financial incentive to train to teach in England. (If living in Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland at the time of application you must secure a teacher training place at an institution in England. This scholarship is not available to overseas students.)

If you’re a student, recent graduate, or career-changer seeking Initial Teacher Training, you may be eligible for a Scholarship provided by the Department for Education, delivered and supported by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.

Teaching provides a unique and extraordinary opportunity to change young lives for the better. Gaining access to a BCS Scholarship to support your teacher training entitles you to the following:

  • £30,000 tax free funding from the Department for Education to support your studies.
  • A year’s pastoral and professional development support from the BCS team, including webinars, CPD resources, access to coaching / mentoring, and access to a supportive network of current / former scholars, teachers, and computing subject matter experts.
  • Two years’ professional BCS Membership.

What we are looking for

Applicants must meet the bursary eligibility criteria set out in the bursary guidance by the Department for Education:

  • Intend to take up a training place on a fee based (non-salaried) secondary teaching course that leads to QTS (pre-16) in Computing / computer science starting in September 2024
  • Hold a computer science or related degree with a proven or predicted grade of a 2:2 or above by September 2024
  • Be entitled to support under the Student Finance England criteria.

After completing an online application, successful applicants will be invited to an online assessment, during which you will be asked to present a lesson plan (prepared in advance), as well as answering questions posed by two BCS Assessors.
