Course content

MSc Criminology at Aston University develops a critical understating of criminology, moving beyond narrow legal definitions of ‘crime’ to focus on the causes and expressions of a variety of social harms. We study the operation of the criminal justice process, placing it within its wider social context of power, deviance, and exclusion.

You will examine the operation of the criminal justice system in depth, with core modules exploring the evolving relationship between technology, harm, and social control. Optional modules allow you to specialise in areas such as online communities, enabling you to critically engage with contemporary and emerging forms of criminality and regulation in a digital society.

Across the programme, you will build advanced research, analytical, and digital skills through a suite of bespoke methodological modules. Learning is enriched through workshops and engagement with professionals working across criminal justice and related sectors, offering valuable insight into real-world practice. Together, these elements prepare you to critically analyse complex social problems and apply your expertise to professional careers in criminal justice, policy, research, and beyond.
