Research at BU
We deliver world-leading, life-changing research. In the 2014 REF, 96% of our research was rated as internationally recognised. We are also proud to be placed 4th in the south west for our world-leading impact.
Our location makes us ideally placed for our research. The World Heritage Jurassic Coast and New Forest National Park shape our research and courses, with our internationally recognised research now placing us as number 1 in the UK for Tourism. We are also ranked in the top 20 universities in the UK for our internationally recognised research in geography, environmental studies and archaeology.

Everything we do is focused on the quality of our output and we were the first university to be “commended” for the quality of our student learning opportunities (Quality Assurance Agency, Sept 2013). We are continually improving and are investing £200 million in our buildings, IT and facilities by 2018.
In order to help us deliver a great student experience, the Students' Unioin (SUBU) has over 100 clubs and societies, has its own nightclub and offers numerous volunteering opportunities. SUBU also provides a voice for BU students and has 750 trained student representatives. There’s a real energy about BU, and we know that SUBU is a major factor.
Our brand new Student Centre has recently opened on our Talbot Campus and is the new home of SUBU. This six-storey building includes social learning spaces, SUBU offices, a student advice centre, a café, radio and media studios, bookable meeting rooms and BU student services.
We also have a wide range of facilities designed to provide you with additional support throughout your time at BU.
Fees and funding
Studying for a postgraduate qualification can be a great investment, so we offer a number of scholarships to help bright people build futures. We are pleased to guarantee a £2,000 Academic Scholarship to anyone starting a BU Master’s degree with a 2:1 or higher. For terms and conditions and to find out more, please visit our website.
We asked BU student blogger Alice to pass on her valuable advice about funding your postgraduate study in the video below.
Bournemouth is a major tourism destination on the south coast of England, situated between the World Heritage Jurassic Coast and the New Forest National Park, with both Stonehenge and Poole on its doorstep. Our Lansdowne Campus is within walking distance of both Bournemouth Beach and the cosmopolitan town centre. Bournemouth is not only a great place to study, but also a great place to live. Perhaps that’s why so many of our graduates choose to stay in Bournemouth and benefit from our growing digital economy.
Extensive rail, road, air and sea links make Bournemouth very accessible. London is less than two hours by train and the ever-expanding Bournemouth International Airport provides an excellent gateway to Europe.
