Dedicated postgraduate facilities

The University has invested in a range of facilities tailored to meet our postgraduates needs. Our dedicated Graduate Centre serves as a hub for the postgraduate community, providing taught and research students a retreat filled with top-quality academic and social facilities. The University Graduate College aims to foster an intellectually stimulating environment, where our research students are encouraged to share and develop research interests with colleagues from other academic schools and to feel part of a wider research community. Based in the new Hadyn Ellis Building, the University Graduate College incorporates space for its training events and conferences as well as additional work space for research students.

A first-class study environment

student

In recent years, substantial investment in our estate has been made to provide students with modern and well-equipped facilities that create a first-class environment in which to live and study. Postgraduate students at Cardiff University benefit from a variety of new and recently refurbished lecture theatres and laboratories, state-of-the-art resource centres and comfortable study areas throughout the University. This investment continues and we are now investing £300m in our new Innovation Campus, including £44m in a new facility to house a unique collection of the most powerful brain imaging scanners in Europe.

Having undertaken my BSc at Cardiff, I chose to continue at the School of Planning and Geography on the MSc Sustainability, Planning and Environmental Policy. This Masters served to fulfil my keen interest in the environment and facilitate my career progression, with the aim of becoming a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute - the accredited body for Town Planners. Following my studies, I have gained a role with Savills as a Graduate Planner and hope to settle in Cardiff for the foreseeable future.

Cardiff has all the appeal of a large city, but in a more compact fashion. There are always cultural and sporting events happening, which make it a great place to live - both as a student and a young professional. During my studies I became a keen member of the Cardiff University Rambling and Hiking Club, which provided me with the opportunity to see a great deal of the countryside and mountains South Wales (and beyond) has to offer.

I have also taken the opportunity to extend my studies through the University's Centre for Lifelong Learning, where I will hopefully continue to learn, develop interests, and meet new people."

A Student’s View

“Studying a PhD at Cardiff University has helped me focus on my academic discipline immensely. Not only does the University take care of its postgraduates through providing fantastic academic support and the use of its impressive postgraduate tailored facilities, such as the Graduate Centre and the Haydn Ellis Building, but being a campus within the city means you can also absorb all that this great capital has to offer.

Both my supervisor, and the vibrant postgraduate work environment that the Welsh department offers, have provided the perfect balance between work and social life which is a key element towards maintaining a healthy mindset for completing a PhD” Geraint Whittaker, PhD Student, School of Welsh.

What the guides say

“Cardiff seems to have it all: grand civic architecture in a breezy waterside location, super-smart city bars and venues just a short hop from lovely countryside. The University is as confident and forward-looking as the city it’s located in, and has an excellent reputation for the quality of its teaching and research. There are more than 30,000 students, including more than 6,600 from over 100 countries outside of the UK, helping to create a vibrant, cosmopolitan city.” Guardian University Guide 2016.
