Course content

Developed in collaboration with the industry, Oil and Gas Management MSc is Coventry’s largest and longest running degree course in oil and gas. Delivered, like Petroleum and Environmental Technology MSc, by the largest group of oil and gas specialists at Coventry University, this pioneering programme can be taken as a conversion course or as a means of enhancing relevant skills obtained at first degree level.

This course aims to equip you with the skills required to support a range of management/professional careers in the global petroleum industry. It provides a comprehensive advanced level introduction to the operation of the industry (upstream and downstream), and explores the key challenges and emerging technologies that are influencing exploration and production and the future of oil and gas. Core modules focus on pivotal issues for industry managers/professionals such as project and quality management, health and safety management and petroleum contracts and economics. Students can then enhance their employability by specialising in one of four routes (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment [QHSE]; Finance and Investment; Law and Policy; and Technology Management). Course highlights include the use of industry standard simulation facilities and software (including an innovative simulation centre, which supports real time scenarios linked to the management of industry-related emergencies, and a state of the art commodity trading floor), and the opportunity to obtain an IOSH accredited Managing Safely Certificate. MSc OGM students can also participate in a vibrant Student Chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

This course is ideal for a person who is interested in a career or already working in the energy and hydrocarbon industry. It will benefit students from a range of technical, non-technical and commercial backgrounds. The course aims to provide an understanding of the processes, drivers, threats and opportunities related to the management of the energy and hydrocarbon industry in the 21st century. The programme adopts a multidisciplinary approach drawing modules from various specialist areas including petroleum contracts and economics, project management, renewable energy, risk management, environmental management, strategic and human resource management.

On successful completion of the programme, students will in addition to their degree certificate have the opportunity to obtain an IOSH accredited health and safety certificate. The Oil and Gas Management MSc will equip graduates with the expertise required for leadership and management in the world’s fastest growing and most dynamic sector.
