About Glasgow Caledonian University

Glasgow Caledonian University offers a stimulating, vibrant and accessible environment for learning, teaching and applied research. Nearly 17,000 students from the UK and abroad study here, and we aim to provide each and every one of them with an unbeatable student experience, a high-quality education and valuable employability skills.

The University is made up of three academic schools - the Glasgow School for Business and Society, the School of Health and Life Sciences and the School of Engineering and Built Environment. Our schools contain state-of-the-art laboratories, facilities and equipment, as well as a number of renowned centres of excellence.

At Glasgow Caledonian we offer a wide variety of postgraduate programmes that embrace full-time, part-time and distance learning study options. As a postgraduate student, you can choose to build on your first degree from the university's range of Masters programmes, or enhance your future prospects with a "direction change" postgraduate degree.

We have an excellent reputation for Applied Research, and we offer rewarding MPhil and PhD opportunities as well as Research Studentships. There are many "learning in later life" opportunities too, both for those who want to update their knowledge and those choosing to take a degree course for the first time.

We have a long tradition of conducting research that is economically and socially relevant - applying new knowledge to problems of global significance in areas such as health, the environment and economic development.

The results of RAE 2008 fully confirmed Glasgow Caledonian University's international profile in research. Our submission in Allied Health Professions places us overall in the top ten universities in the UK. Our submission in the Built and Natural Environment places us in the top twenty universities in the UK and, in research on sustainable urban environments and building design as well as the field of waste management and recycling, as the leading university in Scotland.

Research Degrees

Opportunities for full-time or part-time research leading to the higher degrees of MPhil or PhD at GCU are available in all departments.

The period of registration for an MPhil ranges from a minimum of 18months full-time to a maximum of 4 years on a part-time basis, with a PhD programme requiring between 30 months and 6 years of study.

Studentships

A number of research studentships are available in the university for a period of three years. Studentships give successful applicants a maintenance grant, access to all university facilities and entitlement to apply for registration for an MPhil or PhD.

Facilities

Glasgow Caledonian University provides one of the best learning environments in the UK at our modern campus in the heart of Glasgow.

The hub of the campus is the striking Saltire Centre. Home to the university library, the Base student support desk and flexible study spaces for 1,800 students - including our unique inflatable igloo semi-private study areas - the building is fully wired for Wi-Fi to help you study where you want.

Other facilities include the Arc fitness centre, Students' Association, the refectory and learning cafes, computer labs across the campus and extensive student support services.

Accommodation

Situated just across the road from our campus, our Student Accommodation complex Caledonian Court houses 660 students in 100 modern, self-catering flats. Perfectly-located for those early morning lectures, you can roll out of bed at five to nine and still be in the classroom in time for your first tutorial.

Facilities include:

  • 100 self-contained flats containing six to eight bedrooms
  • Fully-equipped kitchens
  • Private en-suite facilities in 340 rooms
  • Free Internet connection
  • Coin-operated laundrette on site
