Entry requirements
For MSc entry, a good relevant Honours degree (first or second class) or equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered. Given the clear practical element of the programmes, we will also consider non-graduate candidates holding less than a good Honours degree, or its equivalent, but with compensating qualifications or experience may be admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma programme. Transfer to the MSc will be possible later on if exams and course work are at MSc level.

Course content
The MSc in Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University is a programme of lectures and project work that encompasses a wide range of petroleum engineering fundamentals pertinent to the modern petroleum industry.
The programme allows students to study specific courses as well as undertake a field development project (with other students) and an individual research project. Project work provides an opportunity for ideas and methods assimilated through lectures and tutorials to be applied to real field evaluation and development design problems. The courses are applied in nature and have been designed so that a graduate is technically well prepared for, and has a sound knowledge of, the industry into which they will be recruited.
The programme has the principal objectives of providing specialist, high quality learning and teaching, along with a range of transferable skills, research awareness and improved employability.
The course also provides flexible study options to interested candidates.
- Full-time students can take four courses in the first and second semester and two projects to complete their degree within a year.
- Part-time students can choose to complete the programme over the course of two years. In each year, they can take two courses per semester and two project in semester 3 of Year 2.
