Entry requirements

Entry requirements: Applicants should normally hold a UK 2:1 honours degree in any subject, with science, engineering, or social science backgrounds preferred. Relevant professional or industry experience may also be considered. International applicants are welcome and may apply with a wide range of recognised international qualifications. While Imperial accepts many equivalent qualifications worldwide, applicants should note that the published minimum standards are for general admission to the University and may not reflect the specific requirements of this programme.

Course content

The MSc in Conservation Science and Practice equips students with the knowledge and practical skills to lead evidence-based conservation programmes addressing global biodiversity and sustainability challenges. Through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates ecological and social sciences, students develop the expertise needed to design, deliver, and evaluate conservation projects effectively and ethically.

Delivered by the Centre for Environmental Policy at South Kensington, the programme is available full-time (one year) or part-time (two years), offering flexibility for different learners. Teaching combines seminars, practical sessions, fieldwork, field trips, one-to-one mentoring, and insights from leading conservation researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. Assessments focus on real-world conservation activities, including grant proposals, presentations, and policy briefs.

A key feature of the programme is an independent research project on a topic of the student's choice, conducted in the UK or abroad, often in collaboration with research institutions or NGO partners. Graduates gain the practical experience, analytical skills, and professional network needed to pursue careers in conservation science, environmental policy, research, government, and the non-governmental sector.
