Course content

Bioengineering is the fusion of engineering with life sciences. The field focuses on the development and application of engineering concepts, principles, and methods to biological systems, in order to monitor, diagnose and treat disorders and disabilities that affect living organisms. The technologies that are generated in this area might include synthetic tissues or organs, sensors that are wired to human body and prosthetics that mimic the natural function of a limb. Established only recently as an academic field, bioengineering integrates elements of electrical and mechanical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, and materials science with biology. Thanks to this multidisciplinary nature, the field of bioengineering often creates out-of-the-box solutions addressing problems of living systems. As such, bioengineers are thrilled to invent technologies that will revolutionize healthcare and increase the span and quality of our lives.

​​Research Topic - Materials for Bioscience & Environment

New materials for biomedical devices and for the development of frontier technologies for a more sustainable and clean environment, aiming at separations in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, water separation and purification, constitute an important and interdisciplinary topic in the BESE Division. The research includes the synthesis of new polymeric and composite materials, surface functionalization and nanostructuration, morphology control for membranes, tissue scaffolds, and sensors. For that, advanced imaging and surface characterization methods are applied and further developed. ​
