Entry requirements

1st class or 2:1 undergraduate degree (or the equivalent from an overseas university).

We may consider candidates with a lower second class degree or with professional qualifications from a recognised institution if they can:

  • how relevant work experience and/or relevant professional qualifications
  • demonstrate that they are highly motivated
  • provide referees from their university or employment strongly supporting their admission onto a masters level programme.

In these circumstances we will usually admit a student to our certificate or diploma programmes, possibly with a view to the student transferring to the master's programme if they successfully pass their first two examined subjects. Relevant professional qualifications will be taken into account.

Holders of the Diploma in Geriatric Medicine (DGM), Royal College of Physicians are exempt from 60 credits, and may therefore fast track and omit one-third of the MSc. If you believe you are eligible for the credit exemption, please notify the Admissions Team via your King’s Apply account and provide a copy of your Diploma.

Course content

This programme aims to

(i) deliver an interdisciplinary, advanced education in Gerontology and Ageing through three distinct programme pathways that allow students to develop expertise, critical analysis, independent judgement and communication skills in one of the following areas:

  • Gerontology
  • Ageing and Society
  • Public Policy and Ageing

(ii) develop students' substantive and theoretical understanding of the field of Gerontology and Ageing, along with specific programme pathway knowledge, and their ability to apply this understanding to issues confronted outside of the classroom

(iii) develop students' competence in, and ability to apply, qualitative and/or quantitative research methods in the field, including the critical appraisal of methods, application of methods to research questions, the collection or sourcing of appropriate data, and the analysis, interpretation and communication of findings

(iv) foster a research-led learning environment and provide an open and supportive learning environment where students can draw on their experiences and relate them to the substantive, theoretical or methodological material at hand

(v) foster the capacity for critical analysis, independent judgement and communication at a level commensurate with taught postgraduate study.
