Entry requirements

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Music, Music Production or Audio Technology, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment.

You should include reference to the following areas in your supporting statement:

  • Why you want to study MSc Sound & Music for Interactive Games at Leeds Beckett University
  • What games inspire you to want to work in the industry and why
  • Talk about a recent example that shows how passionate you are about sound design / dialogue / or music for games
  • Talk about a book or article you have recently read that gave you a real insight into audio for games

All suitable candidates will be required to submit a portfolio prior to acceptance on the course. Please include in your supporting information a link for us to download the following: A 60 - 90 second video clip of gameplay from a video game. This should have the original audio removed and replaced with either your sound design, your music, or both. Please accompany this with a PDF document that describes what your approach might be to implementing what you've done in a real game.

Course content

As part of this course, you'll:

  • Gain the most up-to-date skills in sound design and interactive composition as you explore the importance of music and sound in a range of media
  • Build your appreciation of the practical and theoretical issues associated with the design, development and management of audio for games
  • Critically analyse information relating to sound and music for interactive games as you develop your experience and skills
  • Learn to solve advanced problems and make autonomous decisions in complex situations
  • Communicate a range of information and content in appropriate formats, reflecting both scholarly and professional contexts
  • Demonstrate your originality and synthesis when applying theory and techniques to projects throughout the course
  • Use reflective strategies to develop and evaluate your self-managed learning and professional practice
  • Be part of a supportive community, engaging in critical debate with classmates and giving and receiving peer feedback

With the next generation of games consoles upon us, the demand for 'Hollywood' quality soundtracks to match the increasingly impressive visuals in games has never been greater. On this course, you'll have access to a suite of high quality, professional music studios, filled with the latest industry-standard equipment.

Our facilities include five recording studios, each with a control room and live area with instruments and amps. You'll be able to develop your creative ideas and expertise in these facilities using real-world game engines, middleware and prototyping tools to implement sound and music into games
