Entry requirements

All entrants must hold an Honours degree in a relevant subject or a recognised equivalent qualification. GCSEs in English, Mathematics and Science at Grade C or above are also required before interview. Preference will be given to students with an Early Years Education degree for the 3-7 age range courses.

Course content

The Primary KS1 course (3-7) includes a specialist study of the early years foundation stage curriculum and the distinctive pedagogies encountered in reception/nursery classrooms and children's centres. School placements will be completed in relevant age phases, including nursery and reception classes for students on the KS1 course.

Whichever route, you will learn the principles of curriculum design and delivery, and theories of learning and teaching, alongside developing practical insights and skills in the effective teaching and assessment of young children. The course will enable you to meet the requirements for qualified teacher status (QTS).

PGCE routes at Newman provide two opportunities - Professional Graduate Certificate of Education which prepares applicants for teaching or Postgraduate Certificate of Education which will include 60 credits at Masters level. The latter will be offered to applicants with an outstanding academic record or significant experience.
