A research degree offers you the opportunity to develop your research skills and prove yourself as a researcher. Entrance Requirements

The minimum academic requirement for admission to a research degree programme is normally an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a UK or ROI HE provider, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. Further information can be obtained by contacting the School.

Mode of study/Duration

Registration is on a full-time or part-time basis, under the direction of a supervisory team appointed by the University. You will be expected to submit your thesis at the end of three years of full-time registration for PhD, or two years for MPhil/MD (or part-time equivalent).

Course content

The School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EEECS) aims to enhance the way we use technology in communication, health services, data security and many other related areas. Pioneering research is the lifeblood of the School and is evidenced by REF 2014, in which 100 per cent of the School's research was judged to be internationally excellent or world leading.

Our commitment to research has led to the establishment of ECIT (the £40m Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology) and more recently the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT), which is the UK's lead university centre for cyber security research.

With the research from these centres, and the spin out companies supported by the School, EEECS is in an excellent position to drive and influence the economy at a local, national and international level. Information for international students

International students (where English is not their first language), must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in any component (*taken within the last 2 years) is required.
