Course content

The MA by Research in French at the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Royal Holloway is a flexible programme that allows students to undertake in-depth study (both full and part-time), under the supervision of international experts, on a broad range of subjects, including literature, visual or cultural studies or comparative topics.

The core of the MA by Research is a dissertation on a subject of your own choosing, intended to give you the scope to explore your area of interest in real depth, to develop sophisticated critical and analytical research and writing skills and to test or try out an area of study in preparation for doctoral study.

In support of your work on your dissertation you will also complete a research-focused, taught module which will equip you with a range of theoretical and historical approaches to the study of literature, art and culture, enabling you to articulate, refine and persistently test your approach to your chosen topic within this broader theoretical and methodological framework.

We will consider applications from students of French, German, Hispanic Studies or Italian, or with a background in comparative literature and culture. Possible dissertation topics might be focused only one particular language area or culture, or might include comparisons between the literature, film or culture of different language areas (including texts in translation). Dissertations may also deal with other comparative topics such as adaptation, reception, interpretation, performance, place and displacement or creative transfer. All proposals are subject to the availability of appropriate expert supervision. Please consult our staff profiles: http://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/mllc/staffdirectory/home.aspx.

We are currently advertising fee waivers (deadline 13th March 2015)
