Course content

Gain the skills and knowledge to work in the ever-changing global fashion and technological landscapes – whilst contributing to the sustainable future of the fashion, beauty and lifestyle industries.

Whether it is non-fungible token (NFT) drops, the opening of virtual retail spaces, the introduction of virtual influencers, or the launch of the first global Digital Fashion Week, the world of digital fashion continues to grow and innovate, setting an exciting precedent for what could be to come. With everyone from luxury fashion brands to online gaming platforms embracing the opportunities digital fashion holds, this masters will equip you with all the critical and creative skills needed to push your practice and explore the developing symbiosis between the real and the virtual worlds. Whether you come from a background in fashion, media, marketing or gaming, this masters offers you an opportunity to develop your cross-disciplinary practice and explore the future opportunities of the digital world.

Fashion is a dynamic field with trends pointing to the need for all brands to embrace significant innovations in digital design, production and promotion to facilitate the creation of multiple digital and physical products from both fashionable and functional briefs. From immersive experiences to full virtual fashion collections, this course will provide forward thinking postgraduates with the digital capabilities to lead and innovate in this sector while also supporting a student’s individual career aspirations allowing them to tailor work specific to their discipline, whether this be fashion design, marketing, content creation, promotion or gaming.

The course culminates in a final master's submission, where students can either write a thesis or produce an original creative digital fashion outcome using everything from digital design to photography, AR, VR and immersive experiences. Students will have access to a wide range of industry-standard facilities in support of this project.

Core modules

Digital Fashion Practice

This module has been designed to enable master's level students to conceptualise and create a range of theoretical and practical research outputs specific to the current landscape of the digital fashion industry. Students will immerse themselves in the world of digital fashion looking at both its past and present incarnations in the world of fashion (and its emergence in other sectors) pushing their investigations perhaps to the expanding beauty and lifestyle sectors.

Fashion Futures

This module will explore fashion forecasting and the boundaries and limitations of existing knowledge, pushing in to new areas and ideas that will influence and impact future fashion and beauty practice and that, ultimately, will inform developed solutions to complex problems. Central to this module will be the awareness and understanding of emerging digital developments, and the investigation of future digital technology. The evaluation and critical analysis of this complex information will create new knowledge that will be translated into innovative and creative trend interpretation.

Masters Project

In this module students will design, execute and present an individually demanding piece of work that deploys a systematic and in-depth understanding of the skills and debates relevant to creative direction for fashion and beauty.

Masters Project: Proposal and Development

In this module you will plan and prepare an academic proposal for your masters project or dissertation. You will be taught how to successfully define, research and prepare for a substantial project or dissertation that will bring to life research in interdisciplinary creative practice. Traditional research-based skills and knowledge will be explored in relation to contemporary research methodologies. Within the module students will be introduced to diverse research methodologies and sessions will explore how research methods and practices can be applied in the context of critical analysis, academic debate and interdisciplinary creative practices.

Professional Development

This module, which focusses on the fashion, beauty and creative industries around the world, will equip students with advanced skills to enable them to research the industry they seek to work in and to critically analyse opportunities. Students will be supported to produce a career development plan including an element of work-based learning, professional development or professional research practice equivalent to 100 hours.

Information for international students

All international applicants need to be aware that the English language requirements to attend Solent University, and the English language requirements to obtain a visa from the Home Office, may be different. This means that if you meet the Solent University language requirement to gain a place on the course, you may still have to meet additional requirements to be granted with a visa by the Home Office.

We strongly advise all applicants to visit the Home Office website which outlines all the requirements for a successful visa application and to take a look at this PDF document which outlines both Solent University and Home Office requirements for a number of language tests.
