Course content

Intellectual Property has long been an international subject which has recently grown tremendously in prominence, with technology pushing and breaking boundaries as never before. Our LL.M. in European Intellectual Property Law (EIPL) was set up in 2000 and has since reached solid international recognition.

From the academic year 2025-26, our EIPL programme has a new structure. Please see details under "Programme overview" below.

The EIPL Masters is a unique programme designed to give students both the theoretical depth and the practical skills needed to excel in the field of intellectual property law.

Our curriculum combines rigorous academic study with hands-on learning, ensuring that graduates leave with a strong foundation in IP law as well as the ability to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. Courses are closely linked to ongoing research projects led by professors of private law at Stockholm University, meaning that students benefit directly from the latest developments in scholarship and policy. The Master’s programme covers all major areas of intellectual property law, including patents, copyright, trademarks, designs, and geographical indications. It also addresses contract-law-related aspects and private international law, ensuring students gain a solid grounding in the broader legal framework. At the same time, the programme engages with contemporary challenges in the IP field, asking questions such as: How should copyright and patent systems adapt to the rapid development of generative AI? What role can IP law play in tackling climate change and promoting sustainable technologies? How can global IP rules balance innovation incentives with equitable access to medicines and vaccines? And how can trade secrets and data ownership be reconciled with transparency and competition in the digital economy? By combining foundational knowledge with critical reflection on such pressing issues, the programme equips graduates with both practical expertise and the ability to navigate the evolving landscape of IP law.

Teaching is delivered by a diverse faculty: not only professors of law, but also experienced practitioners and judges from Sweden and abroad. This blend of perspectives ensures that our students learn how IP law works both in theory and in practice.

The programme also offers a vibrant extra-curricular environment. Students can join our active social media group to connect with peers and alumni across Europe, and they have the opportunity to contribute to the Stockholm IP Law Review, a student-driven publication that bridges academia and practice. These activities build community, sharpen writing skills, and provide platforms for professional networking.

The EIPL Masters programme is more than a degree: it is a gateway to becoming part of an international network of scholars and professionals shaping the future of intellectual property law.
