Course content

This programme teaches you how to manage and manipulate large datasets to reveal new insights in biological sciences. You develop a structured, computer-based approach built on biochemistry and molecular biology, and gain practical skills in Python, R, statistics and computational biology for data integration, analysis and visualisation.

The North East, particularly Teesside, is an important regional, national and international hub for the life science sector, with both well established (FujiFilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, GlaxoSmithKline, Hart Biologicals) and emergent (Absolute Antibodies, StreamBio, Hexis Labs, Quantum Dx) companies. Our Darlington campus, which includes our National Horizons Centre (NHC) and ATMOS building, sits within this ecosystem and supports engagement with industry through guest lectures, case studies and collaborative activity.

This course develops comprehensive knowledge and understanding of bioinformatics in the 21st century. The campus provides analytical and digital infrastructure that supports fundamental and applied bioscience, with collaboration across disciplines and with industry.

Where possible this course is taught at ATMOS building at the University’s Darlington campus.
