Course content

Explore the fascinating world of microbiology, equipping you with advanced knowledge, practical skills and a springboard for future employment. Designed for those with a background in life sciences, who are eager to deepen their expertise. Microorganisms are extremely important in many areas of our lives – understanding how to harness and manipulate them, while controlling their potential to cause disease, is essential.

Gain a well-rounded perspective on modern microbiology. Combine theory with hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art Bios labs - a £36.9m facility at our Middlesbrough campus. Develop practical skills through innovative experiments, using industry-standard equipment. Explore research opportunities at our £22m National Horizon Centre (NHC) at our Darlington campus, where many faculty members conduct their research. Graduates have pursued a PhD at the NHC, working with academics in a chosen field of microbiology.

You are taught by a team of passionate, dedicated, research-active scientists, who bring a wealth of expertise and passion to the classroom. You work alongside an academic on your Life Science Research Project, tailoring your experience to personal career aspirations. You are supported at all stages of the course, resulting in a high success rate of future employment when graduating.

As part of the advanced practice element, you complete a vocational internship with an outside organisation or an academic research internship within the university. This placement helps you develop and enhance your skills and experiences, expanding your networks and strengthening your CV. It may be in a wide range of disciplines depending on the partner. Previous students have secured future employment or a PhD as a result of their placement.
