Course content

Gain practical skills in our diverse life sciences and health sciences labs.

The Arts, Activism and Social Justice summer school is open to international students from any academic discipline who want to understand the context for, and learn the tools to effect, social change. It's a summer school with a difference: you'll be learning not just from academics, but also local activists, community creatives and an amazing cohort of fellow students with a wide range of experiences.

You'll investigate initiatives for social justice from across the globe, with particular attention given to racial justice, colonialism and legacies of enslavement. You'll explore the role of arts and culture within these initiatives, drawing on diverse disciplines which may include, for example, philosophy, history, law, music and dance, visual arts, poetry, and storytelling.

You’ll learn how to create transformative change in the world around you in a range of skill-building, creative and academic sessions delivered by a network of community leaders, activists, academics and artists from Bristol's thriving grassroots sector and around the world.

The summer school focuses on five overlapping themes:

  • Racism and social justice
  • Colonialism and independence
  • Strengths-based community development
  • Migration and refugees
  • Environmental sustainability

You’ll share your experiences and knowledge, explore diverse ways of linking arts, activism and social justice, and develop your own vision for positive change.

Recent alumni have described the programme as "a pivotal experience" and "nothing less than transformative".
