Course content

Examine the nature of warfare and its impact on society across centuries with the MA and PhD in Military History at the University of Buckingham. These research-led programmes offer a distinctive opportunity to explore conflict not just through battles and campaigns, but through the political, social and cultural forces that shape how wars are fought and remembered.

The MA in Military History by Research provides an intensive introduction to independent historical research, allowing you to investigate topics ranging from the campaigns of the Duke of Marlborough to the end of the Second World War. Students pursue a self-defined research project culminating in a 25,000-word dissertation, supported by close one-to-one supervision. Alongside this, a rich programme of evening seminars in London - featuring leading historians - offers the chance to engage with cutting-edge scholarship and debate key issues in an intellectually stimulating and sociable setting.

The programme encourages students to look beyond traditional narratives of warfare, exploring themes such as strategy, leadership, society, empire and the wider consequences of conflict. Training in archival research, source analysis and historical writing equips graduates with the skills to produce rigorous and original work.

For those seeking to advance their research further, the PhD in Military History enables you to undertake a substantial original study, producing a thesis of 70,000 - 80,000 words that contributes new knowledge or fresh interpretation to the discipline. Working closely with expert supervisors, doctoral candidates develop independent research while engaging with a supportive academic community.

The University also offers a PhD in Military History by Published Works, designed for established scholars and Buckingham graduates who wish to gain doctoral recognition for an existing body of published research. Candidates submit their work alongside a critical commentary demonstrating its contribution to the field.

Based in London and enriched by access to world-class archives, libraries and military institutions, these programmes provide an exceptional environment for the study of war and its wider historical significance.

If you are passionate about understanding conflict in all its dimensions - from battlefield tactics to global strategy - the MA or PhD in Military History at the University of Buckingham offers the expertise, support and intellectual community to turn your interest into original research.
