Course content
The MPhil/PhD Security and Intelligence Studies at the University of Buckingham is a research‑intensive doctoral programme that enables students to explore critical questions in global security, intelligence and strategic affairs under expert academic supervision. Delivered through the University’s Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies (BUCSIS), the course combines rigorous independent research with engagement in contemporary issues affecting national and international security environments. Candidates are encouraged to develop original research projects that contribute to scholarly and policy debates in areas such as counter‑terrorism, intelligence analysis, cyber security, foreign policy, statecraft and the evolving challenges to global stability.
Supervised by leading researchers with real‑world experience, students benefit from a vibrant research community and the opportunity to interact with a diverse range of ongoing projects across the UK and overseas. From analysing judicial and counter‑terrorism systems to examining the historical roles of intelligence communities, current doctoral work reflects the breadth and depth of the field.
The programme is available on a full‑time and part‑time basis and culminates in the submission of a substantial thesis that demonstrates advanced critical thinking, methodological competence and scholarly contribution. Graduates are well placed for careers in academia, government, policy‑making, intelligence and security agencies, and other research‑oriented roles where deep analytical skills and specialist knowledge are essential.
