Applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree, 2:2 or higher, plus either a Level 7 qualification related to mathematics education, such as a PGCE Mathematics or a PG Cert Educational Practice in Mathematics, or have completed an eligible course with the NCETM.

Do you want to deepen your understanding of how mathematics is taught and learned?

The University of Chester’s MA / PGDip in Mathematics Education is designed for educators who are passionate about developing their own teaching practice and contribute meaningfully towards improving mathematics education. Whether you’re working in primary, secondary, or further education, you’ll become equipped with the essentials tools to critically evaluate research, reflect on your own practice, and apply new ideas in practical ways to improve learner outcomes.

Bridging theory and practice

This course is closely aligned with professional practice, supporting you to explore educational work across diverse settings. You’ll research key issues within mathematics education and apply contemporary theories to enhance teaching and learning.

The structure combines core MA Education modules with focused breakout sessions dedicated to mathematics education. These smaller sessions are designed to help you link theoretical insights with day-to-day practice so that your learning has immediate relevance and impact. You’ll also carry out a tailored research project that closely aligns with your own professional context.

Designed to accommodate the busy work schedules, this course offers dual delivery. You can choose to attend in-person sessions at our Exton Park campus, just a short walk from Chester’s city centre, or join the live sessions delivered online via Microsoft Teams.

With both in-person and online learning opportunities, we help to accommodate different learning needs and professional commitments, making it accessible to educators in various settings.

Teaching is consolidated into six Saturdays per year, supported by six online evening seminars, giving you structure with the flexibility you need.
