Entry requirements

A 2:2 honours degree in an area broadly related to education, and/or special educational needs. Those with a degree in a different area but with experience of working in an educational setting with children/young people with special educational needs and disabilities will also be considered. Applicants without an undergraduate degree but with significant experience of working with children/young people with special educational needs and disabilities may be considered and will be invited for interview.

The University of Chester’s Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) MA/PGDip/PGCert is designed for individuals like you who aspire to make a meaningful difference. Throughout this course, you’ll develop the expertise needed to advocate, innovate and lead in the field of special educational needs and disability.

Drawing on the latest policy, research and practice in SEND, this course will also equip you with key critical evaluation and research skills, enabling you to make informed contributions to development in policy and practice.

Develop expertise and make a difference

You’ll gain knowledge and understanding of the key issues within special educational needs and disability including neurodiversity, mental health, and inclusive practice. This will help you to in gaining confidence to provide support to both learners and their families.

In addition, you’ll analyse the historical and current SEND landscape, investigating factors which have contributed to an increase in the numbers of children and young people being identified as having special educational needs and disabilities.

Study to suit working professionals

This MA/PGDip/PGCert is structured to complement your existing professional commitments, with an in-person study option complemented by online learning, as well as a full live online option.

For in-person study, this will take place at Exton Park campus, which is just a short walk from Chester’s city centre. Here you’ll benefit from dedicated learning resources, bookable study spaces and convenient on-site cafes.

This blended learning approach also involves access to online learning, tutorial support and access to the University’s library services and academic staff.

Those who have completed the course have been promoted within their institutions or have gone on to progress within other educational areas. Some take on independent work, whilst others work in advisory roles within the LEAs and other educational institutions.
