Entry requirements

Applicants require:

• 2:1 (or above) honours degree in any subject.
• Grade C/4 in GSCE Maths and English Language. We will also consider nationally recognised equivalent qualifications for both Maths and English Language.
• IT competence.
• A satisfactory occupational health check.

Course overview

The social work profession is dynamic and diverse. It requires a particular combination of intellectual ability, analytical skills, emotional resilience, empathy and the ability to use role-based authority when needed.

Social workers work closely with other organisations to support and protect children and adults from harm, and to effect personal and social change. Studying Social Work at the University of Chester will offer you an opportunity to develop the skills needed to perform as a social work practitioner in today’s challenging and unpredictable landscape. Social work education at the University of Chester is provided in collaboration with the Cheshire and Merseyside Social Work Teaching Partnership. The teaching partnership comprises of four universities, eight local authorities, two community NHS trusts and one voluntary sector organisation.

Students are taught in small groups in supportive and encouraging environments, and service users and carers are involved throughout the course.

Social Work at Warrington Campus has excellent links with Local Authorities and with many private, voluntary and independent agencies, who provide opportunities for supportive learning in practice placements.

Teaching staff are qualified and registered social workers, and are able to use their research and practice experience to enhance teaching sessions.

We have an excellent relationship with local employers who frequently comment on how impressed they are with our Social Work students. A high percentage of Social Work students from the University of Chester gain employment with local authorities upon completion of the course and registration with HCPC.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is delivered through a variety of methods, such as lectures, group work, role play and blended learning.

For each module, there will be a maximum of 36 hours’ direct contact, up to 140 hours’ private study, and up to 24 hours’ direct study. Full-time attendance is required on placement.

How will I be assessed?

We employ a range of assessment methods, including essays, presentations, portfolios and role plays. You will also benefit from 30 skills days and 170 days of full-time practice placement over the two years.
