Entry requirements

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in Civil Engineering, or closely related field.

Course content

Pursue a career in the civil engineering sector in Ireland or abroad with UL’s full-time, one-year Master of Science in Civil Engineering.

The programme offers advanced training in core civil engineering disciplines, equipping graduates with the technical and professional expertise needed for modern engineering practice.

Developed to meet industry demand and with links to UL’s leading research institute - Bernal Institute, the programme combines high-level skills in design, analysis, and communication with a strong focus on sustainability and climate action.

This programme will suit you if you want to advance your employment prospects across subdiscipline areas such as environmental, energy, geotechnical and structural engineering.

The programme fulfils the educational requirements of Engineers Ireland for a master's degree in an engineering discipline for Chartered Engineer status.

During this programme, you will:

  • Learn to identify ethical, social and professional responsibilities and dilemmas faced by contemporary civil engineers with an emphasis on sustainability and climate change.

  • Develop project planning and management strategies to provide solutions within a fixed timeframe.

  • Focus on a wide range of challenges across society where civil engineers contribute solutions and knowledge in areas such as environmental and energy engineering, structural engineering and transport engineering.

  • Undertake a significant research project on a specific problem at the forefront of civil engineering; formulate feasible solutions, and present results.
