About University of Nottingham Ningbo China

University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was the first Sino-foreign university to open its doors in China. Established in 2004, with the full approval of the Chinese Ministry of Education, UNNC originated from the University of Nottingham in the UK. It is a key member of the University of Nottingham global educational system.

UNNC ranked highest for research quality in the 2019 ARWU China’s Best Universities Rankings. The average impact factor of scientific research output in the past 5 years is 1.56, higher than the average level of 1.36 of C9 alliance universities.

We recruit world renowned academics to contribute to local research development in key strategic areas, so as to promote technology transfer and transformation. 11 members of staff were selected in the career long database and 15 members of staff in the single year database according to the 2022 version of “World Top 2% Scientists” released by Stanford University.

PhD Programme

We offer a wide variety of scholarships to potential PhD candidates seeking to study with us. Our scholarships include faculty scholarships, strategic scholarships (including China Beacons Institute scholarships) and Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) scholarships. PhD programmes at the UNNC are composed of 3 years research and a 1 year thesis pending period for full time PhDs. Full time PhDs are expected to submit their theses within a maximum of four years from initial registration.

On successful completion of the PhD, the students will be awarded a PhD degree from University of Nottingham. No reference will be made on the degree certificate as to where the degree has been completed. The University of Nottingham PhD degree is accredited by the Chinese Ministry of Education and the UK Quality Assurance Agency.

Nottingham University Business School China

Located in Ningbo, one of China's most entrepreneurial and business-orientated cities, Nottingham University Business School China (NUBS China) delivers first-class business programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and executive levels.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

English language support

The Centre for English Language Education (CELE) at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China is one of the largest and most well-established English language teaching departments in the world. Our teaching team consists of around 120 experienced tutors from 21 countries and regions around the world. CELE provides a wide range of Preliminary Year, Master Degree Preparation and Professional Education and Training courses, which form an integral part of UNNC.

The Preliminary Year Programme was designed by CELE, and combines small-sized classes, one-to-one tutorials and step-by-step curricula across our 50+ modules. Each year, CELE tutors teach more than 2,100 first-year students who come to us for our high-quality academic English and introductory academic content courses, ensuring our students are ready for their degree-level studies in English. CELE also provides Master Degree Preparation Courses to help students build the foundations and knowledge for success in their future Master’s degree programmes.

Outside of the classroom, the Writing Lab@UNNC is a specialized advising and support team within CELE that provides extra optional English language and study skills guidance for all students, from the Preliminary Year to Postgraduates. Through 1-1 advising, workshops, lectures, discussion groups, and bespoke modules, our experienced specialists help students improve as writers, speakers, listeners, readers and more.

Using its expertise in teaching, a series of high-quality bespoke Professional Education and Training courses are also designed and run by CELE for corporate clients, partner institutions and community outreach programmes.
