Course content

  • Engage in advanced study of adolescent development
  • Obtain in-depth knowledge of adolescents' experiences of mental health and wellbeing, and best practice interventions when working with this population
  • Gain hands-on experience of applying this knowledge within a professional setting through placement opportunities
  • Opportunities for those without a psychology background to gain knowledge and skills that will make them stand out when applying for roles across different settings (e.g. in health and social care)

Good mental health during adolescence is a national and international priority. This course was developed to provide a more in-depth understanding of adolescence as a unique development period and to increase the specialist knowledge and skills of those who work with (or want to work with) adolescents across a range of settings. The course offers a unique combination of modules that take a strengths-based perspective and provide focused training in theoretical and practical issues that are directly relevant to the mental wellbeing of adolescents. It provides a balance of theoretical and practical elements and therefore provides students with the opportunity to improve their understanding and apply their knowledge to practical situations and problems, including the opportunity to undertake a professional placement with a relevant organisation.

This programme is aimed primarily at graduates of psychology and relevant disciplines, but those without a psychology background will also be able to utilise the skills they gain from this programme to go into careers in the health and social care sector.

Note: This course does not confer eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society.

MSc Adolescent Mental Health & Resilience is made up of 180 credits at SCQF level 11, comprising 60 credits of taught modules in Year One and 120 credits in Year Two (including Placement and Dissertation).

Semester 1 comprises three taught modules, while Semester 2 comprises two taught modules + a compulsory Placement module. Students will also complete a Dissertation during Semester 2.

Each 20-credit module (all classes but the 20-credit Placement) is 200 hours of study, 20 of which are class time. The rest of the time is reading, research, and writing assignments. All classes are currently scheduled for weekdays, between 9am and 5pm.

The Placement module is a compulsory module for the MSc Adolescent Mental Health and Resilience. You’ll undertake at least 60 hours of agreed activity within an approved placement organisation.

The structure of the hours will be agreed between you, the placement organisation, and the placement coordinator.

Taught modules will be delivered across two semesters, running from September to December, and from January to March.

You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and a work placement. The dissertation is undertaken during the summer months.

Modules are assessed by various methods including exams, essays, poster presentation, and reflective pieces. The dissertation project is assessed with a final report appropriate to the research question.
