About University of Sussex

A uniquely Sussex education

The University of Sussex is a research-intensive campus university with an excellent international reputation located just minutes from the vibrant seaside city of Brighton & Hove.

For over 60 years the aim of our courses, research, culture and campus has been to stimulate, excite and challenge. At Sussex, we will encourage you to speak out in support of the things that matter most to you. We will help you to deepen your knowledge, skills and confidence so you are world-ready to pursue your personal development, and career choices.

From scientific discovery to global policy, from student welfare to career development, Sussex innovates and takes a lead. And today, in every part of society and across the world, you will find someone from Sussex making an original and valuable contribution.

Our world-class research challenges conventional thinking, offering inspiring and creative ways to understand and solve global issues and create a better future for humanity.

Our teaching is informed by current research and you’ll be encouraged to apply your knowledge to real world challenges in creative and collaborative ways, backed by a supportive academic community.

Academic excellence

Our academics are asking the questions that help to shape the world, and this is who you’ll be learning from. Their work impacts policy and practice for businesses, NGOs and governments.

More than 89% of our research activity was categorised as world-leading or internationally excellent in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021).

We’re especially proud to have been ranked as 1st in the world for development studies for the seventh year running, in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

At the University of Sussex we have a thriving international community. Our reputation for academic excellence attracts teachers, researchers and students from around the world.

Our campus

Sussex offers a welcoming, safe and supportive campus community surrounded by the tranquillity of the South Downs National Park. Our green, leafy campus is known for the beauty of its open spaces – with lawns, woodland and wildflower meadows to relax in. You can take a break from your studies and step directly into the stunning countryside.

As well as being beautiful, our campus is like a large village, with everything you need for day-to-day life. This includes a post office, GP surgery, dentist, sports centre, supermarkets and pharmacy as well as numerous cafés, bars and restaurants, and a weekly food market. The spacious Student Centre is a hub for student life, with support and information services, social areas and retail outlets.

Vibrant city

A sunny seaside city famous for its sense of inclusivity – there can be few better places to be a student than Brighton. Dynamic and cosmopolitan, it's a place where you can express yourself and be who you want to be, with the city centre just a few minutes train ride from our campus. It offers everything students could want for an enjoyable university experience – culture, entertainment and an abundance of shops and restaurants.

Broad curriculum, flexible courses

From Art History to Robotics, Applied Linguistics to International Management, Philosophy to Human Rights, we have stimulating Masters courses – and world-respected academics – across the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities.

All our on-campus courses are also supported online, with real-time lecture access and recorded teaching sessions, module reading sessions and supporting materials available through the University’s virtual learning environment.
In addition to full- and part-time on-campus study options, we also have some Masters-level courses which are taught 100% online, allowing you to study at a time, pace and place that suits you.

We’re extremely proud that Sussex has been named the University of the Year for Student Retention by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022. The award singles out Sussex as the best in the country for supporting students to stay on their course and complete their degrees.

Funding your studies

We have a range of attractive Masters scholarships available. These can relate to specific courses, where you live, or your level of achievement. Find out more about Masters scholarships, loans and funding, including government funding and extra money for social work and teaching courses.

Support for your future career

Our Careers and Employability Centre team offers advice, information, workshops, events and work experience opportunities to support you throughout your time at Sussex, and for three years after you graduate. We love entrepreneurs – which is why we offer lots of support for students wishing to start or grow their own business or social enterprise.

As a graduate of Sussex, you will be welcomed into our 200,000-strong alumni community. You will become a part of an incredible network of people from across the globe for whom intellectual curiosity lasts a lifetime.

As a Sussex student, you will be able to access Sussex Connect, which is our exclusive, global e-mentoring platform for students and alumni. Use it to expand your global network, gain a mentor or become a mentor.

Welcoming international community

We’ll welcome you into our friendly community of academics and students of over 150 nationalities. With internationalism at our heart, you can be confident you'll be joining a warm and connected academic community.
Situated on the sunny south coast, and just a 9-minute train ride from campus, the iconic city of Brighton is only one hour from London with excellent travel links to both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

As teaching at Sussex is in English, you’ll need to be sufficiently fluent in English. But don’t worry if you don’t have the language skills yet, we offer English language and academic preparation courses.

Home from home

We’ll help you find a place you can call home. We have a wide range of on-and off-campus accommodation. Many of our flats and houses have ensuite bathrooms and we also have flats which are especially suitable for students with families, or for students with disabilities.

We offer guaranteed University-managed housing for full-time international Masters students who apply before the published deadline and make the £2,000 tuition fee pre-payment (unless exempt).

If you are a UK Masters student or are an international student studying on a part-time course, our Housing Services team is on hand to provide you with advice and assistance to find private accommodation locally.

How to apply

We are looking for ambitious, enthusiastic and motivated students. You’ll have the passion to succeed, the independence to take on your own projects, and the ability to go above and beyond.
