Apprentice customer service practitioner — Kaydn Wright

After leaving school, Kaydn decided to look for work instead of pursuing further study. He managed to secure a Level 2 (intermediate) customer service apprenticeship with construction, property services and development company Wates

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

At school, I always knew I wanted to get stuck into working after completing my GCSEs, rather than going to sixth form or college and continuing with my studies.

In year 11, I started working as a roofer for a family member and realised I much preferred the working environment to studying and revising for exams.

How did you find and apply for your apprenticeship with Wates?

I found the apprenticeship on Indeed and after reading up about the job, I decided to apply. I had to complete an online task and an interview. After this, I was offered a place on the apprenticeship scheme.

How does the apprenticeship work?

My role varies quite a bit, which I enjoy. I have two customers that I look after on a day-to-day basis, organising pre-planned maintenance and other work that needs to be completed.

I get to work with a variety of people within the business, which has helped me to get to know everyone. I also have coursework to complete as part of my apprenticeship, which I do in my own time, on designated study days.

What do you enjoy about your apprenticeship?

I've been given a fair amount of responsibility since day one, which has made me feel like a valued and important member of the team. It has also encouraged me to think and work independently - skills I'll definitely need for the future.

What do you find the most challenging?

Striking a balance between coursework and work has been a bit difficult at times, mostly because I haven't experienced it before. However, it has become easier the more I've done it and it's now part of my weekly routine.

How has your role developed and what are your career ambitions?

I've had a really positive start to my career at Wates and I'm pleased with the progress I've made. I've worked on lots of different projects, which I hope will set me up for success in the future. I'm looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and seeing what the future holds.

What would you say to others considering the apprenticeship route after leaving school?

I'd definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship. I've enjoyed learning and earning at the same time, and having a job has helped me to mature.

It's important to think about what you enjoy. I knew I preferred working more than studying, so an apprenticeship was the right path for me - but not everyone is ready to start work at 16-years-old.
