Applicants should normally possess a good honours degree (2:2 Hons min.). In some cases an honours degree below a lower second class may be considered if the applicant also has a Master's qualification. All applicants must possess GCSEs (grade C or above) in English Language, mathematics and science before the PGCE course begins, or equivalents acceptable to the University. Primary Maths applicants will also need a minimum of grade B in GCSE Maths. It is desirable that applicants also have an A level in mathematics or a related subject at grade C or above, and/or significant related, education based work experience. Applicants are also required to have gained a minimum of ten days recent state primary school experience (prior to applying) and have passed the skills tests in literacy and numeracy.

This course aims to enable you to meet, and exceed, the Teacher Standards’ criteria as set out by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) for teaching across the primary phase of education.
The course will not restrict you to a limited age-range for your career. It will support you in meeting the NCTL requirement to teach across two consecutive age-phases, and within two different school settings. You will be able to request whether to be based with 3-7, 7-9 or 9-11 age-phase for some professional placements. Similarly, there will be opportunity within the course to apply for a professional placement in a SEN school. Please note that all such requests cannot be guaranteed, but they will be taken into consideration when allocating students to placement offers received from schools.
The School of Teacher Education and Development, within which this course resides, enjoys a strong partnership with local primary schools and early years’ settings. They are fully involved in all aspects of the programme, including recruitment and selection, course planning and development, leading support for your progress against the Teacher Standards when you are on placement, and grading you against the Teacher Standards.
All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Professional Studies, Curriculum Studies and Enhanced Studies. All learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and your academic study will be both informed by, and also inform, practice.
