Entry requirements

Entry to the CILEx Level 6 Higher Professional Diploma in Law and Practice is open to all learners who have completed the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice.

Those wishing to the Level 6 Single Subject Certificates (individual units within the CILEx Level 6 Higher Professional Diploma in Law and Practice) should have experience within the subject they are studying. If not, it is recommended to study CILEx Level 3 qualifications first to ensure learners have the knowledge they need to complete the Level 6 Single Subject Certificates.

Important Information

As part of the introduction of the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ), Learners wishing to complete a Level 3 qualification must have registered as a CILEx Student Member by 31 May 2021. Learners enrolling on the Graduate Fast-Track Diploma must also register for CILEx membership by 31 October 2021.

However, if you do not have CILEx membership you can also register with CILEx as a non-member to sit exams (only applicable for Level 6), subject to exam fees. Summary

The CILEx Level 6 Higher Professional Diploma in Law and Practice is the next step for a learner who has completed the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice. This Diploma is set and assessed at Level 6, honour degree level (final year of university). This is the final academic stage to become a CILEx Fellow (FCILEx) and after completion of the Diploma, a learner would seek to finish/gain their Qualifying Employment period.

Career Prospects

Learners who complete their CILEx Level 6 Higher Professional Diploma in Law and Practice can register for Graduate Membership with CILEx.

With a CILEx Level 6 Higher Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, a learner could become a Senior Paralegal Fee Earner or Case Worker.

Qualifying Employment to become a Chartered Fellow

With the additional requirement of Qualifying Employment, which consists of a work-based learning portfolio, a learner can become a Chartered Legal Executive and CILEx Fellow (FCILEx).

After completing three years of Qualifying Employment, including one year which must be completed as a Graduate Member of CILEx, a learner can apply to become a Chartered Legal Executive and/or an Authorised Practitioner.

Progress from this can include firm partnership, advocacy, and judicial roles.

Course Content

The CILEx Level 6 Higher Professional Diploma in Law and Practice consists of 6 units in total.

Mandatory units

Unit 22: Client Care Skills

Unit 23: Legal Research Skills

Elective units

A learner must also choose a Practice Unit and a Linked Law unit, along with two other law units of choice. A full list of units is available here.

Course Assessment

Each unit completes with an assessment. For Law and Practice units, this takes the form of an end of unit exam hosted by CILEx in June and January. For the Skills units, the assessment is coursework based.

On average, a learner is expected to spend two years completing the CILEx Level 6 Higher Professional Diploma in Law and Practice.
