Liverpool John Moores University’s (LJMU) School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences is one of the oldest providers of pharmacy education in Europe, delivering industry-relevant courses since 1849.

We welcome students from over 100 different countries and work in collaboration with businesses, professional bodies and educational institutions from all over the world showing how diverse LJMU is.

Our facilities

The School has brand new, state-of-the-art laboratories. Our facilities are equipped for:

  • Animal cell tissue culture and stem cell research

  • Targeting of drugs
  • Chemical synthesis
  • Instrumental chemical analysis
  • Spectroscopic studies
  • Microscopy: SEM, TEM and confocal microscopes
  • Computational chemistry

Our Life Sciences Building has been recently refurbished, providing us with highly-specialised and state-of-the-art facilities where students and staff can explore their interests and take part in top level research.

Our extensive range of labs and equipment includes:

  • Chromatographic equipmentTableting and particle sizing equipment
  • A computing laboratory and state-of-the-art molecular modelling software
  • Electron spin resonance spectrometers
  • Thermal analysis equipment
  • Full forensic microscopy suite
  • A range of forensic DNA analysis equipment including Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction
  • Forensic equipment, including cyanlacylate and ninhydrin ovens

Impactful research

Our research staff collaborate with leaders in the sector such as AstraZeneca and Pfizer and with other university research groups across the world including China, Spain and Slovakia. Our staff receive funding from a variety of sources including the British Council, Department of Health and Swiss Government.

The recently opened Centre for Pharmacy Innovation sees the first research collaboration in the UK between a hospital, university and community pharmacy. The Centre is looking at improving how patients’ medicines are managed and prescribed outside of hospital.

Our research expertise includes: biomedical science, formulation and drug delivery, medicinal chemistry, clinical pharmacy, chemical and forensic analysis and chemoinformatics.
